349BHP / 343 LB-FT on £ 200 Chargecooler kit

Fitted on car (just).....
and ready to roll.....
Temporary water tank fitted in back seat, circulating around chargecooler due to cooling radiator not fitted in time for test day ! Each dyno run raised temp of tank by 15 deg C ! "Davies Craig" high flow electric water pump can be seen at side of tank.

The moment of truth !!!
Run No 2, immediately after run No 1 with charge water temp at start of run up 15 deg due to no cooling radiator, picked up another 15 degrees on this run Water temp was 42 deg C but still no det
Burger had the brakes on !!!!! There's where the bhp went

And the actual truth..........
This was run 2. I didn't realise it would overwrite run 1 and I wouldn't get a print off later .....Doh !
The numbers written in pen are from run 1.....honest ! there were plenty witnesses, most of them scoobynetters
Also all the cars done a 40 > 90 mph timed acceleration run in 4th gear run on the rollers.

Eventually got this done and some pics. Quality of pics a bit dodgy due to scans.
STi donor intercooler with side plates removed
Some carefully cut up bits of 1.2mm alloy plate and diffuser feed pipe.
A few welds later !

very cool indeed
When driving hard for long, eventually the cooling water gets warm and the natural inertia wich is inherent in such setup makes it a little slow to get cool again.
I like the idea of water as exchange medium, far superior to air, but the above ahve kept me -so far from doing it. I will follow this very carefully.
Good work!!

get one of those drinks coolers and plug it into ur cig lighter...
put ur water into that...that should keep it cooler..
and pack ice around it
or make something out of one of those kryogenic things... like u get for PCs..

hmm reminds me of a joke...
what has a woman and a Kfc got in common?
Once youve finished with the breast and the leg, all you've got left is a greasy box to put your bone in..
Anyway back to the point.... btt but below my thread!

i'm sure my '92 legacy comes with this as standard or something very similar, found this link a while back

Yes, Legacy has a chargecooler but I think it is limited by its heat transfer area, water flow rates and radiator capacity. Gavin has upgraded his pump and radiator.
The STi intercooler I used has the largest heat transfer area that can fit in that space. I have an 80 ltr/min pump fitted, the hoses are all 1" bore and I'll be fitting a high capacity lightweight alloy radiator, possibly from a Yamaha R1 or similar.
That part is still under development as it is crucial to be able to cool the water quickly. Keeping the water within 5 degrees of ambient is my target.

How have you managed to get your transmission losses so low? I have a 96 WRX and lose approx 80-90bhp (drag), from what I've seen posted before 75-90 bhp seems usual. Not being critial, just interested in why mine is losing so much!

Nice work CC, wish I was so handy.
It appears that you have the early bonnet like me so would I presume have had the slanty intercooler to start with. How did you fit the bigger straight intercooler on as I looked at doing this myself and it didn't appear to fit?
Did you have to move anything else?
Congrats on the figures too.
Cheers
Rich

You got it Disco gearing doesn't change flywheel power figure but produces more at the wheels due to lower speeds on the rollers. Also, my maximum power is developed at a relatively low 5600rpm so I genuinely have less drag as I'm not spinning the transmission so fast.
Rich - The STi I/C is a VERY tight fit. I removed 5 mm from each of the hose end fittings on the I/C and throttle body. I also had to move the servo pipe (seen dangling above I/C) and 'reprofile ' the rear engine mount bracket. It now clears the bulkhead by a few mm ! Good job it has stiff engine mounts.

Nice figures.... on the dyno read out that is!
So have you done no other mods to the car other than the charge cooler? except exhaust and filter perhaps? and the removal of the bonnet vent covers?
Damn good idea......
In the same boat as Rich with the slanted intercooler.. wonder what the results would be to do the same but with the slanted intercooler.... hummmmm....

My temp probe gets hit with the water inj spray so never reads above 22 deg C. When I first fitted the C/C i had to turn the boost down 4 psi as the clutch couldn't hold it from 4000 rpm !
I think that explains the 'dip' in the torque curve around 4k.
As I have my fuel set for higher midrange boost pressure it would run rich.
Either that or the clutch started to slip on the rollers ?? Sounded ok though.

I don't intend keeping the tank in the back seat !! It was just so I didn't miss the dyno session. I will be fitting a radiator to circulate it round soon.
The same water was in the tank for the run to the venue (35 miles) two 30 second full power runs and one 40 - 90mph acceleration run.
It was pretty warm by the time I changed it to go home !!
May refit the tank and fill with ice for dyno days though

Andy what have you done too my old STI intercooler I sold you. Looks a great mod especially once you have got an extra cooling rad in. I am glad I sold the intercooler to someone who has put it to a good use. I have just finished fitting my Apexi front mount, complete b*****d of a job getting the bumper to refit.
