Unhappy

I was out last night in the car and noticed much to my dismay that changing from 3rd to 4th under power (um, I was pushing the cluth in ) the gear's would grind.

The only way to aviod this was to change very slowly and it feels fine but any urgency results in a noisy gearchage - and fourth gear's lifespan reducing

Is this a common problem?
Do I need to go back to driving school again to learn about gearchanges?

Edited to say it is an STi 5 - same gearbox as a P1? Am I right in thinking P1 gearboxes had problem's??

Whoops! don't think i was very clear with my answer. I bought the car with 26k and having owned it for a week i noticed the problem you describe above. It wasn't happening all the time but it was regular enough. Anyway to cut a story short, i never pulled my finger out and had it sorted so therefore it was still an issue when my 30k service came up. Didn't mention it to the gararge just to see if problem would be solved by the gearbox oil being changed. After the service found the problem still there, however within 2-3 weeks it had vanished without a trace.
