Default GEARBOX WENT POP now clicks.

I was driving along not putting any pressure on my box and it went pop, now it continually clicks third gear (poss synchro) is shot all other gears seem fine but trying to put into 3 rd crunches and sounds horrible, whilst driving a continuall click click click can be heard.

Now i know i can just get a 2nd hand box but i dont have any history and the same could happen again, ideally i want to get mine rebuilt or do it myself.

Im quite a competent mechanic but have never touched a gearbox.

Does any one know anyewhere local that does gearbox rebuilds for a fair price i live in bromley, BR1

I have searched through the forums and the people mostly recomended are quite far away and i would have to get my box couriered to them or if they are local a friend can drop it for me.

But another option is to just get another 2nd hand box and then rebuild mine myself and with that in mind does anyone have any boxes for a jap import my95 turbo 4wd ??

All help greatly appreciated

I rebuilt my box last year after the transfer case bearings started howling and third got crunchie - i then put a second hand box in which had the same bloody fault ! Its 20 years since i last broke a box open and i was crapping it - its ok though just take your time ,lay everything out on sequence on your bench - Go here for your parts - this chap knows what a centre differential bearing looks like ( i found a lot of main dealer parts men who dont) he will email you the proper parts diagrams - you tell him what you need and i comes quickly and correctly.

Oh - and good luck!

gears need pressed on with a bench press , also lineing up the front diff etc and doing the lash adjustment isnt easy , it looks easy but is time consuming etc , with the use of a workshop manual you should crack it providing you have the press to put the gears on and off etc its just lining up the diff etc that can be tricky ( you will see that the ribbed inserts where the diff shafts exit the box rotates inwards and outwards and has a locking tab , this needs adjusted after the box is stripped )

good luck but all in all i would just change the box for a s/h one from a reputable source

ok so i dont have a clue what lash adjustment is.
And also i wouldnt know where to get these parts from, a gearbox specialist or main dealer ?

im no expert and it became a sort of personal challenge !i just adjusted the axles by feel - and its perfect - i had a shot of press at work and it all came to bits ok -dont worry to much about microadjusting everything and deffo buy a pr of new drive shaft seals as they will be goosed - your beginning to need a few parts here m8 while your at it check the lge bearing in the back of the transfer case if its rumbling get rid of it too - youve no idea how much quieter the box runs with that bearing renewed.

well so far ive bought a 2nd box to put in for the time being, ive got qoutes for 3rd drive gear and 3rd n 4th driven gear and just for the gears i was looking at 450+vat and that doesnt include the new diff bearings ill need and other parts while redoing it plus im no expect so im just going to save up for a recon one or a ppg gearbox from somewhere.
