gearbox issues
Hi all
bought a 98 turbo 2000 in december and mid january gearbox bearings went. found a 95 wrx box with matching rear diff and shafts for a good price and swapped the lot. all was fine for a couple of months no funny noises and box seemed very smooth, until two nights ago when i gave it a bit of stick in 2nd coming off a roundabout. went to change into 3rd and there was a judder followed by a loud rattling noise. took the box off yesterday and pulled it apart to find all the teeth from third gear lying at the bottom of the box
the cars near enough standard and only running around 250bhp surely a wrx box is enough to cope with this? could this just be bad luck? dodgy box? dont really want to spend more money on the same box for the same to happen again. as i see it i have two options, buy another wrx box and hope for the best, or look for something a bit stronger. dont really want to go down the 6 speed route because of the high cost and dont think its really required for power the cars running (i know its torque that kills boxes but cant see it being mental high at 250bhp!)
can anyone share some wisdom on this matter?
cheers

Same thing happened to me tho i have little more bhp than you.2nd full trootle, then third and kaboom
Options that came to my head are two:
1)6 speed.....around 2k
2)rebuild uprated 5 speed.......850 +250for matching dif (rebuilt also)
I went for secpnd option as i am runing stooc internals and wont push further than 320-330 bhp.
Strange tho you have problems with 250 bhp......maybe it is time to take your car to the dyno

ye was thinking about a dyno but will need another box 1st
the only other thing i could think of is, ive still got both gubbed boxes. was thinking about removing 3rd gear from the box with the bearing issues and putting it the wrx box. not sure if this is a good idea or not? or whether it would even work?
