Blowing over bottle top noise
#1
Sorry guy's, been done before I'm sure. I got the noise as above, and I seem to have lost some boost. What is the cause of the noise and how do you fix it.
Would this cause loss of boost.
Cheers,
Leigh

this from SIDC faq
3.1 Dump Valves (aka Blow off Valves and By-pass Valves)
There seems to be a recognised problem with the 1997 specification car's dump valve. This does not shut properly under boost and thus vibrates giving the sound similar to someone blowing across the top of an open bottle. It has also been likened to a steam train whistle or ship fog horn in extreme circumstances!. Meanwhile the 1998 model seems to have a totally revamped and larger blow off system, but I have had reports that the problem sometimes still occurs.

Hi Leigh
I've also got MY 97 uk turbo with same problem i think, most noticable when doing 35 mph about 2100 rpm approx, it done it all the while i've had the car so not sure if it's affecting power, i'm interested in price for new one or possible cure
Stu.

Before you buy a new dump valve check to see that all the pipework is properly attached. I had the same noise a while ago and it turned out that a previous owner had forgotten to replace one of the hose clips so the joint was leaking under pressure.

This problem with the dump valve sticking... is it likely to happen on newer cars?
Mine is a MY00 (at least that's what it was sold to me as... but I have a suspicion that it's actually a late registered MY99) which recently got very laggy, down on power, rough, unhappy etc etc etc. It intermittently produces a "blowing over milkbottle" noise at between 2600 - 3000 rpm under light load on acceleration. I took it to the local dealer (Tileys in Bristol) and when I suggested that it sounded like the descriptions of a sticky dv the service manager didn't seem to want to take me seriously.
Anyway, I left the car with them for a day and they actually did make it feel much better. Apparently the manifold pressure was lower than it should have been, and they fiddled with the "orifice" (presumably a bleed valve or restrictor of some kind). It now goes much better than it used to but still makes this whistling noise. Any ideas gratefully received!

Finally,
Stu - New DV £60 + VAT, easy to fit yourself, hey presto there's my boost back.
Pault00 - If you've got the bottle noise, you've got a leaking DV, which will cause a loss of boost. Sorry can't help with the rest.
Cheers,
Leigh
