Default Rear Diff Gone?

On my way to work my N/S rear wheel hit a pot hole. Straight after the car started whining from the rear.At first I thought something was rubbing on the inside of the wheel but couldn't see anything obvious. Now I'm thinking rear diff? Parked up at work about 300yards further. Got in tonight to come home and when I put the car in reverse and started moving I heard a sound like an alternater belt slipping. I thought it was a car going past but my work mates were all looking at ME!. The car did NOT whine on the short journey home. Obviousley it's dark now but I'll have a look underneath in the morning. Is there anything I should be looking for or is there anyway to check the diff? Can I just change the Diff or will the box have to be changed too?

Car is a MY99 UK Turbo.

Cheers.

Could be a wheel bearing going, or a bent ABS "ring", or an actual diff problem...

Problem solved. A Spring was floating about inside the drum and got lodged on the sensor. I can't work out where it came from as all springs are fine. Took both drums off and there the same inside. It must of been in there for a while and dislodged when I hit the pot hole.
