Design a proper air filter

b4 reading this... disclaimer for looking stupid... i aint got a clue about air filters... just someone who has heard of the trade-offs of the different types...
ok. i know that we need fuel, and a spark, in air, to make the engine work... good eh
it seems to me that we have designed good components for the stuff that:
makes it fuel well... gives different types of sparks... and have loads of common sense options for improving the flow of the used gases away from the engine... but air filters??? oh dear.....
i dont understand why we are still using seemingly crude methods for filtering the air... i mean... i know we need to get the particles out of the air before it gets into the engine... in contact with moving parts...
what do we do? - filter it by paper, goo, or metal...
surely all trade offs? all percentages... bit like a golfer playing up instead of going for the pin...
paper for good filtration yet slows the air down..?
goo for improved air flow but sends gunk towards the maf sensor.. and surely doesnt get all the particles
metal... coz its like paper but more spaced out and a bit harder..
cant we do something else?
something that flows fast... for plenty of nice oxygen.. and something that stops all particles?
there must be another method?
zap the particles ala the new diesil exhausts?
use a larger barrier filter that filters out the particles... stops more air in the process.. but shifts a larger quantity of air by having a larger air contact surface?
use some other sort of physics type thingy to remove the particles?
even store the air in some way? like we do with petrol?
i know it will cost more... but with loads of money spent on other performance parts... isnt there another option to get air into the engine?
