Can you get any oil or additive to quieten a noisy gearbox?

My WRX's gearbox has got quite noisy of late, making a sort of droning noise, particularly when slowing down in 3rd & 4th. I've just had the car serviced (at Roger Clarke Motorsport) and they say it's just a noisy bearing, that "they all do that when they've done a few miles, and it's not worth taking the 'box out". Well, that's as maybe, but it's getting on my t1ts! (Sorry for the expletive! )
Can you get any oil/additive that will quieten it down? Cheers for any advice!
BTW, it's a '95 model, and it's done 46k miles.

Not much clue, but i saw in halfords the other day a castrol 'box oil, semi synthetic. It said on the bottle that it was "specially recommended for japanese cars". Ninja Oil methinks.
Also, my mate with a 200SX (noisy boxes) was recommended by the SX Club that he put synthetic in, they said it was quieter.
