What model year/version number is this type R gearbox? If it's a 99/00MY (version 5/6) likelihood is you're suffering the common problem where the locknut on the back of the input shaft comes loose and allows the 5th gear package to move longitudinally on the shaft.

If so any Subaru specialist or main dealer should be able to fix this quite simply without the need to rebuild the entire box. Can even be done with the box still on the car.

As for "making it stronger", about the only way to do this is to rebuild it with an aftermarket gearkit, which will cost you a sum well into four figures. Why do you think you need to strengthen it?

Incidentally, for want of stating the obvious, if you need someone "who lives close to you", you do actually need to tell us whereabouts on the planet you are...

It's torque, not power, as such, that kills gearboxes. As above you will need to spend a good four figure sum to have your existing box made considerably stronger, and provided you're not blessed with the mechanical sympathy of a neanderthal there's no reason to think your gearbox won't handle the current power level for some considerable time. If you break it, that's the time to consider options.

If, as it sounds, you have an STi version 5 then it's likely you have the loose locknut problem. As above find a tidy specialist near you or take it to somewhere like API in Warwickshire.

Incidentally, when you say you have a UK box in at the moment, what have you done about the rear differential? If you're running a UK box on the standard 4.44 STi rear diff, you will f**k the centre diff very quickly, as well as having a car that is a pig to drive up until the point it fails.
