Gear linkage?

Gear linkage?
Okay folks, not using the right terminology to get any useful help from the search function.
Basically in the last few days I've noticed the gear level go "wobbly" only when moved in neutral towards 1st and 2nd gear (or towards the pasengers side if you like) ie the gear linkage doesn't seem to spring back to the midpoint of neutral. When moving the gear lever right towards 5th gear but still in neutral, when released it moves back to the central position.
On previous cars (french rubbish) this has simply required a new nylon gear linkage/bushing fitted underneath the centre console to the bottom of the gear lever. Had a nosey under the Impreza centre console and it doesn't look like the same setup as the French.
Anybody know whats needing replaced to give neutral the "spring" back to midpoint when moved left and right? Gear selector? Selector rods of some sort? Also looking to know if the fix will require the gearbox out or not. Hoping its the latter.
Car is an Impreza Classic '99. Also meant to add it is perfectly smooth through all gears, no sound of spanners rattling around or anything.. just in neutral the gear lever goes a bit limp.
Cheers.

Does it do first thing in the morning like when it's cold etc?
Do you need to wiggle it or go from neutral then second gear before you can engage first gear?
Mine on does this when the winter comes. Fluids all ok etc?
Maybe the circlip has got a little bent? Possible?

Cheers for the reply steve,
Everything is okay, changing between all gears is as it should be, the only issue I have is the gear lever going limp to one side when it should "spring" back to a central position in neutral. Thats why I automatically thought it was something to do with the selector.
Doesn't matter if its morning or if its cold, its as though the spring mechanism on one side of the elever is goosed. Makes changing to 3rd gear a little bit trickier as you can't just knock it into neutral and go straight up as it isn't finding that central neutral point to go straight forward into 3rd gear.
Anyone else had this?

What about the linkage cable? Maybe if the gearbox tray has come off (during a recent service etc) it maybe pinched?
I'm not 100% sure mate as it sounds different to what I've had in the past?

Yeah I thought there must be springs as part of the linkage. Looks like one side has either broken or fallen out on mine since I only have the "floppy" lever on the left of the box.
Was it an easy job to replace? Whats all involved?
