Welcome back and sorry to hear this has been a rough start.

There was a common fault on the 99MY cars with the lock nut on the back of the input shaft loosening off, with the result that, left uncorrected, the entire 5th-synchro package can float back and forth with eventual destructive effects.

This was addressed during MY00 with a modified nut and assembly procedure in the factory so shouldn't be expected to go the same way on a newage car. Might be worth checking the transmission code on the box though just in case it's been replaced with an earlier one or something strange like that.

Do you know how it's knackered? Worn out or has the hub split and jammed it in gear (or in neutral)?

Assuming the other four gears and reverse are okay the good news is that the 5th package can be changed without needing to fully strip the box so the costs should be relatively containable.

Splitpin is right on the button with his reply. The " big nut " works loose and allows 5th and reverse to float about.

The TY 754 can be repaired in situ. If synchro damage has occurrred on both the gear and the hub then it could get expensive. We usually do these while- u -wait at a cost of between £400 & £500 + VAT depending upon damage needed to be repaired.
