Ahhh subject close to my heart !! Type R coupe uses Nissan R180 diff with 4.444 ratio with a loverly mechanical lsd. I am in the process of changing one of these to 3.900 to run in my sedan. BTW the new STi 01+02 use this same diff with a 3.900 ratio.. but are to new to find any wrecked ones !! Nissan last used this diff in 1983 !! in a 1800cc auto 'Lepard' sedan ;-) eeek makes you think eh... also all STi coupes use Nissan R32/300ZX rear brake calipers... Subaru just shaved off the 'NISSAN' logo and put a Scooby sticker on !! Nissan parts are MUCH cheaper BTW.

Just had my rear diff overhauled, look on gearboxman.co.uk they do race boxes for most cars cost me £229 + the vat dropped the car off tuesday ready by wednesday lunch time. Compared with many of the Subaru experts I got no bull**** and a much smaller bill than I had been lead to belive it would cost !

As far as I can tell only the coupes use the R180 diff. This is to cope with the extra torque transmitted by the centre diff. The rear driveshafts, hubs and brakes are also unique to the coupe... Normal sedan WRX's (93~00) use the smaller R160 diff in a range of ratios.. this would require the complete rear sub-frame to fit a coupe.
