Default drive shaft pins

hi guys just wondered what the pins that go through the front drive shafts either side of the gear box are for as i left mine out.
could it cause any damage.
i have noticed a slight rumble, could it be them.

They are to hold the inner CV joints of the driveshafts to the gearbox. - Without them in the inner cv's will be trying to walk off the stub axles...

Best get the pins back in ASAP

It's worse than that. Even if they don't disengage from the stubs completely, leaving the pins out will allow the joints to wobble on the splines (possibly explaining the "rumble), while, depending on the amount of droop, the joint will either be pushed into the seal, leading to friction and possible damage, or partially disengaged from it, causing oil loss.

As you say, OP should refit them ASAP - and keep an eye on the gearbox oil level for a while afterwards.
