up pipe
i recently purchased a new exhaust sysytem for my 94 wrx and my friend who fitted it told me i need an up pipe to my turbo can anyone enlighten me on this as i dont know what he means if someone knows bout this could u please tell me what they are and were i could get one thank u and how much cheers
Dunno about your car, but the uppipe on my cay (MY01) is the bit that goes from the exhaust manifold into the turbo.
I have a cat inside mine, and it is reccomended to remove this so the turbo will spool up quicker.
Hope this helps,
Olly.

Hi
The up-pipe is the part of the exhaust that goes between the cast iron exhaust manifolds and the turbo. On the MY01+ this contains (yet another bl00dy) catalytic convertor, which restricts the flow (reducing the power) and under some circumstances fails (causing damage to the turbo). Hence the advice is to remove it and replace it with an unrestricted pipe.
On the "classic shape" cars the up-pie does not contain a cat, hence there is no benefit to replacing it. However, on your car you have a cat in the downpipe (the pipe from the turbo going down to the rest of the exhaust system). Replacing this with a catless one gives significant performance benefits (more power, quicker turbo spool up), but might give you problems with passing the MOT.
Based upon the age of your car, IIRC you don't need the cat to pass the MOT, but I may be wrong.

I replaced the up pipe on mine (MY98) when I ported the manifolds. It cost £100 from Graham Goode and is much better flowing than the standard one which is in 2 pieces with an expansion joint. It is also the correct size to match the opened out exhaust port and the turbo inlet. All these things like porting, Samco hoses, up pipes, turbo inlets etc etc add up and together they make a fair bit of difference.
