Has anyone fitted one of these to their scooby? Found out that the bleed hole is probably best left at 0.5mm from my last topic post, however i haven't found out what kind of boost people are running and if they have experienced any problems (i.e. fuelling, ignition etc.).

Any recommendations, advice etc from WRX owners would be most appreciated.

Cheers,

Tony.

Nigel, Dawes is a ball spring manual boost controller, are you meaning the Ecotek? http://www.dawesdevices.com

Edited to add comma so I don't rename you as Nigel Dawes

Just remember the boost cut is much lower on the MY92-96 cars as they have bigger turbo's. Same limits don't apply. Gavin has a Link, his boost cut is fully programmable from that.

Cheers guys,

Gavin, i've already had a look at your site and found it very useful with regards to fitting the Dawes. However what i'm really after is people that have fitted the Dawes to standard WRX's to see how they have set it up, and any problems they have had.

What i am planning to do is fit the Dawes with the 0.5mm bleed hole left as is and turning the boost to about 14.5psi (about 1bar). The standard fuel cut is still in place. Would anyone see that i would have a problem doing this.

Cheers,

Tony.

P.S i've printed out the Dawes FAQ (cheers John) and read it back to front but i can't seem to find any reference to standard WRX's. Sorry if i missed it.

I just collected together a load of threads for the FAQ - did not write it to be comprehensive. Gavin's page is hopefully helpful. I advised you as best I could before, I can't add anything else just now. You need more than just a boost gauge anyway - you need to know a fair bit more safety data.

Cheers John,

Thanks for all your advice so far, its much appreciated. Im startin' to think its not such a good idea, maybe i should be happy with what i've got till i can afford a Link ECU. Knowin' my luck id be the first one to kill my engine, like you said you need more than just a boost gauge to make sure your being safe.

Hi

Yep I've done the deed and my findings are spread all over this bbs in many Dawes threads! Most are listed in Johns Sticky thread, just read through them and you'll find them.

But to answer a few questions:

Fuel cut on my gauge happens at just under 1.1 bar. I've got a MY95 WRX and have read that fuel cut is 15.5 PSI on these models, sounds about right.
I've set mine to hold at 1.0 bar at 10deg ambient - thats 14.5 PSI.
On the rollers at PE I ran with the select monitor, AFR and CO readings were fine on full boost - I ran SUL + OB then and I run Optimax + OB now.
0.5 bleed hole is fine driveability wise IMO.
My only other engine mods is a full Scoobymania exhaust and a K+N panel filter with the resonator removed.

My only advice is to set your Dawes in 5th gear, max boost can climb by as much as 0.05 bar when compared to other gears.

Edit to say go here to see mine and others results.

Hope this helps

Justin

Cheers Justin,

I've got the FAQ printed out so ill go back and have another look. Thats exactly what i wanted to here. The only really difference is that i don't run OB, just Optimax.

How do you find the car, is it a huge improvement?

Thabks agen,

Tony.

Edited to say just seen your edit, cheers agen Justin.

Glad to be of help

The biggest difference is in the spool up - the shove in the back starts sooner and lasts longer. I've raised the boost by 0.1 Bar so theoretically its an improvement but having said that I don't know what my pre-Dawes setup would have boosted to during these winter ambients.

Theres alot of discusion about using the Dawes on trackdays. By the time I do my next one I'll have an EGT and Inlet temp Gauge installed and will back off when things get too warm! An overdose of OB is madetory in these conditions IMO.

If you drive your car hard I'd suggest you use OB especially since you have an import. For and extra £3 a tank its worth the peace of mind, and if you rag it then you're not too concerned with the price of fuel anyhow

I have used Millars and NF, I prefer NF purely in terms of convenience.

Justin

Just found this thread via the FAQ thread.

Took my 95 WRX for a good spin this morning. When I had it RR'd at Powerstation, Rich changed restrictors to adjust the boost levels. It peaks at 1.1 and hold 0.9 BAR in most gears but noticed about 0.93 BAR held in 5th this morning.

Do you think I would notice much difference after fitting a Dawes and if so what?

Thanks
Rikki
