Default STi5 Type R Rear Diff Questions

Hi all, running a MY98 sti5 TypeR, after having a whining rear diff for some time, Im looking at swapping it for a reconditioned unit or simply a second hand one.

How much should I be looking at paying for either of the above?

Any recommended suppliers?

And is my standard rear diff a 4.444?

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks David, that's sounds like a good unit. Ive done a bit of digging and found 1 for £150 from a breaker. However that's with no guarantee although the unit is said to be in good working order.

I'm not one for taking chances on second hand parts, I'm definitely one for paying more and getting a belt and braces job as Ive no intention of selling the car in the near future.

When you say a thoroughly checked over, is that in effect as good as a recondition unit??

We take the back off, drop the LSD out, check its torque setting and adjust if necessary [ most are too tight ] .

Then generally look around, replace the side seals and rear gasket and then ready to go after a black paint job on the body and a clean up off the alloy back cover.

Definitely NOT "reconditioned" as that word has a legal sense and is interpreted under law as " parts replaced with new OE or all parts conform to OE measurements." NOT possible to do that obviously.

Once APi'd it is then a known quantity, if we've done our job right, we can safely offer a guarantee, knowing that it won't cost us a penny under warranty.

It is the best quality secondhand product I can achieve.

Thanks for that thorough explanation David. I fully understand your stance on 'Reconditioned' now. Sounds like the quality job Im after.

I just need to get a second opinion up at my end (Im based in Huddersfield) to confirm its definitely the rear diff. And if it needs swapping then I'll give you a call.

I appreciate your swift replies too.

Thanks
