Fitted a Jetex 3" system to a UK MY96, gained a nice burble but lost some low end torque. Does anyone have any suggestions on restoring (and possibly improving) the torque.

Put the old exhaust back on

I posted a similar question a while back, you'll gain torque higher up the rev band with a less restrictive exhaust. So what you loose in the low's you'll gain in the high's

 

The only way would be to add a restriction somewhere in the engine inlet or exhaust.

Say hot dog muffler, in the mid section. Or modify the header pipes.

Thanks mega_stream - I wondered who would be first to suggest putting the old one back on!.

I have a Dawes to fit once I receive my AFR and had thought about getting a 2.5" section made to replace part of the 3" centre section. I don't know what effect that would have or how successful it would be (3" to 2.5" and back to 3"). Any posts I've seen seem to a smaller diameter rear section for torque (3" to 2.5").

Your dawes will pull back the lost torque by spooling the turbo earlier so I wouldn't go choking up your exhaust just yet !

Have you done a before and after on the Dyno or rolling road? You might be surprised and find that what you think is lost torque is just a bigger difference between off and on boost due to the more free flowing exhaust.

The other thing you can do to get more torque is to put a heavier flywheel in the car.

 

How exactly does a heavier flywheel increase the torque output ?

 

I'd like to know the answer to that one too. Didn't want to look stupid by asking.

Sorry but a heavier flywheel cannot "restore" lost torque.

 

Rev it to 8k and dump the clutch that's the only time a heavier flywheel will give you more torque to transfer.....and then it's only for less than a second (if the box lasts)

I suppose the engine would take 'slightly' longer to slow down when you hit a hill but this would barely be measurable IMHO.

Assuming you want better acceleration at low rpm (or any rpm) then a lighter flywheel would actually help, not a heavier one .

Dawes has restored torque & responsiveness!!. Now running peak .95 bar (want to stay sensible & safe). Dawes AFR runs blue on part and full throttle - is anyone with the Dawes AFR getting similar results?
