Default gearbox problems!!

Hey all, Im Ross,, Sorry if this seems rude jumping in straight away with a question after just joining but I could seriously do with sum help!!

I have been offered a 2000 model Impreza p1 very cheap, so cheap in fact that Im considering buying it, but the only problem is that it had got gearbox problems...

Basically 2nd gear has gone, and from what the owner was saying, he was driving along, droppped it down into second from third and heard a bang and that was it, now it wont go into 2nd gear, All the other gears are fine.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? would it need a new gearbox or would it be able to be fixed easyish??

I have been lookin at whole gearboxes but I cant find any re-conditioned ones or second hand ones anywhere! and when I phoned a subaru dealer he said I was looking about 3 grand for a new one! Is this true?

If so, Do I specifically need a gearbox for a p1? or will others fit? If so, which ones and what would the difference be in them?

If anyone has any phone numbers or gearbox repairers, breakers or a decent subaru contact number plea could you let me know them.

Thanks

iirc the p1 uses the same gearbox as the sti version 5,the best person to ask is david o'brian at api engines ltd , he is a member on here ,he could sell you a recon one or maybe repair the existing one. i'd guess at around £650 for a good recon one, but thats just a guess

The 5th gear is longer on the P1 though.

short version, 2nd gear will have been stripped of all its teeth, i did the same but to 3rd egar in my uk turbo lol

as susgested a rebuild will sort it, and give you the piece of midn to know its in top condition, second hand box's don't always last.
