Hi Nick, before I had the impreza I hardly ever used 1st gear, would always chuck it into 2nd and pull away no problems, so only used 1st from a standing start. Now with the MY02 I have found it very different, even when still rolling (re: your description in your 2nd post) or in traffic you just can't use 2nd to pull away with any purpose, have to drop down to first give it a little poke and then back into 2nd. So why people on i-club are making comments about not using 1st is beyond me That's just the way it is, and working out when to change down is all part of getting used to the car(PPP is supposed to improve this). I've not had any problems with this though and not seen any comments on this board about it, so doesn't sound like a design fault.
Are the UK and US transmission boxes possibly different?

Speaking as a member the i-Club, take much that you see there with a grain of salt. There are people with legitimate problems, but it's mostly a symptom of a place I dub "Land of the Malcontent."
With the STi shift kit and stiffer bushings, my trans rocks. I have about 15.5k miles on the clock, through track days, rally crosses and ice races in addition to frisky street driving. No problems, no worries.
