stuck in reverse

stuck in reverse
iv got a 97 impreza turbo 2000 which is currently stuck in reverse.
what started it off was when i changed from 4th to 5th quickly and it wouldnt go in so i tried again then it went in ok.
after that i could only get 1st and 2nd gear although when it was in 2nd the gearstick would still be able to be moved around.
i pulled onto my drive then selected reverse which it went into fine but now it wont come back out. at the moment the gearstick wont go into where 1st,2nd,5th and reverse should be but will go into where 3rd and 4th should be.
could this be a selector fork? if so does the box need to come out to sort it. any help appreciated.
