I'm also looking at this option at the moment, along with the up-pipe.

Hopefully this mod will allow the turbo to spool up quicker but on the downside will make the exhaust a lot louder. There are also the extra emissions to think about.

The de cat centre made the turbo spool up
slightly quicker, but i was hoping downpipe
would make much bigger difference.I have a back box
off an sti7 which will hopefully keep things quiet.

Question

I too am considering just the SS downpipe. The 'blackbox' that kills the CEL is £50 from SS. I have heard that replaceing the DP doesn't necessarily mean the CEL will come on. Is this true or does it always come on with the DP replaced?

pete quotes approx 3 hours to fit the up-pipe, so i assume it may be quite complex. i fitted the scoobysport down-pipe, de-cat mid sections and back box a while ago and the car is a lot more responsive. down-pipe is a bit of a pig to fit- the best bet is to soak the bolts with WD40 overnight before you try. you will need to remove the heatshield to get to these. don't do this the way we did- take the time to remove the intercooler first and it's relatively straight forward. and don't forget to re-fit the heatshield bracket when you put the new down-pipe on unless you want to look at the beautiful stainless steel thing all the time. I couldn't re-fit mine as i cut it to bits in a rage to get it off the car- running without the heatshield hasn't caused any problems (so far) and i'm told that scoobysport don't usually replace them.

Question

Steve,

why wouldn't the CEL come on immediately. I thought it came on because of an emmissions sensor - do the emmissions get worse over time?

ive heard people on here say they go off for a while
then come back on.Im guessing its because you still
have a cat in the up pipe and it may be able to cope
on its own under certain temps. please correct me if im wrong anyone.
thaks steve

From experience, the CEL seems to come on on a steady light throttle situation - probably when the ECU is running closed loop.

The up pipe is a big job - best done in conjunction with the d/p as that has to come off anyway IIRC.

And they make the most noticeable difference done together...

Cool

Steve, Dave,

thanks, I understand now. Just wondering whether the extra £50 was worth the peice of mind of knowing that when the light comes on there really is something wrong.

My CEL has been on for 8 months (memo - must see Pete and get the gizmo fitted) - when it is reset it seems like there is something missing

Still, the airbag light is on to keep it company.....

Scoobysport do refit the shield, after cutting a piece off it for clearance.
