I have now TWO friends with Import STI's (Same as mine) that have had oil pumps fail causing ALOT of damage, on both occasions this has happened without warning, just a loss of power & then a knocking. I am very concerned about this even though my Scoob is flying, so were theirs before the pump failure. Is there any way of detecting/preventing this prob, cos I am hearing physcological noises from my enging now!.

Cheers,

I think that you're referring to is pressure relief valve in the sticking open, leading to insufficient oil pressure at low RPM.

Do a search... a relatively easy to do mod has been suggested to fix this problem. Apparently it is a quality control issue with the piston in the valve, and a little lapping / polishing is enough to ensure that it doesn't stick. Some people shim the spring in the valve to push up pressure at which the relief valve cracks open.

Cheers,

Alex

Install an oil pressure gauge - It`s not that difficult. Relying on the oil pressure warning light is, of course, pointless.

I spoke to Jamie at David Hendry as ROB B suggested earlier.

I am not technical, but the general jist of the conversation was as follows...

He says they have seen quite a lot of engine failures, no apparent common cause. Amongst the engineers there the only possible cause they could come up with is a loss of oil supply which in itself points to the oil-pump. They have done several replacement oil pumps along with engine re-builds. They replace the standard oil pump with an uprated model supplied by a company called MODINE. The pump is £175 + VAT and the labour is UP TO 3 Hours. I forgot to ask them what they charge for Labour.

I think I will be paying them a visit - prevention better than cure and all that!!

Give them a call, they were very friendly and willing to help.

madness,

Firefox had some uprated relief valves machined up and used to supply these now and then, the last batch was 3 - 6 months ago,i remember seeing the thread in the sale section.

You could troll through all the sale section and mail him as he knows his stuff.

I'd be worried - just had the same problem and now wondering how the hell I'm going to pay for it (£3k+). I must admit to not being technically knowledgable about it, but if you want a low down, speak to David Hendry cars (01666 824 369) about it as they are doing my repair work and they have seen it before.

Prevention is cheaper than a cure!

Editted to point out that mine is an STi IV with 52k on the clock to give you a bit more useful info.

Question

can anyone recommend an aftermarket oil pump to replace the standard one that would prevent this from happenning...?
