Default Diff help

I've done some searching but cant really find what I'm after. I have a '99 UK Impreza turbo and I suspect the rear diff to be knackered so first question is do all UK classic Impreza rear diffs have the same ratio and would I be correct in saying that its a 3.54?

Secondly can someone explain the difference between R160 and R180? Are they something to do with shaft and diff size? If so would it be worth swapping all the UK stuff out? I have a PPG gearset in so dont really want to take the box to bits, but I want to make the drivetrain as strong as possible for hard drag and track use. Cant afford a plated diff at the moment so just wondering if there is a cheaper option thats still an upgrade over the UK one?

Thanks, Shane.

yes

can someone explain the difference between R160 and R180
essentially its 20mm bigger, the R measurement is the distance between the plugs on the back of the diff
I think you're buggered with the 1.1:1 transfer as most of the tasty diffs are all 3.9/1:1

All UK 2000 Turbos have 3.54 R160 rear diffs. They use a 1:1.1 drop gear in the Centre diff to achieve a final drive ratio of 3.9.
The V1-4 cars all use one type of shaft/engagement, MY99-00 cars have a revised arangement which was also carried through to the Newage WRX cars.
THe 160 and 180 measurement is the diameter (in mm) of the crownwheel in the diff.
If you change the diff to an R180 you will need new shafts and rear hubs to match.

Thanks for the reply. Next question then, is it worth swapping shafts, hubs, front and center diffs etc just to upgrade the rear to R180 stuff? Or is the hassle not really worth it and I should just stick another 3.54 R160 diff on?

Oh and also if the V1-4 have a different shaft engagement, would that mean if I bought a pre '99 3.54 R160 diff it wouldn't fit my car without the drive and prop shafts to match?

Damn, just bought some second hand rear shafts, guessing from an earlier car. Is it just at the diff end thats different or hub end as well? Hopefully will have time to take it all to bits next week and see exactly whats wrong back there and what I need.
