Im guessing it wouldnt be as easy as it sounds..

I imagine you would need..

Gearbox
flywheel
clutch
gear linkage and gear stick.
All fixings and bits and bobs from the sti.

And i imagine you would need an STI ecu?

I could be completly wrong, that was just a guess.

Its a a fairly straight forward job. I've put a Six speed on a MY99 UK classic.

You'll need:
Six speed box (obviously)
Gear linkage
Gear ****
Either a six speed prop or a prop from an auto.

Providing you're putting a UK box onto a UK car it really is as straight forward as that. The 5 speed clutch will fit so no need to change that.

Less than ideal?
Stop talking nonsense mate.
Less than ideal for what exactly?
Quarter mile maybe.
Has some distinctive advantages:
far less money than a PPG conversion
Pretty much bomb proof
More flexibility with the gears i.e the right gear is always available not an inbetween you wish you had on the five speed.

I had one on a 400bhp high reving 2.0L and on a 500bhp 2.5. had no problems whatsoever.

Just sold mine. 440bhp and 470lbsft and 6speed was awesome.

As Daz says, can use 5speed clutch and flywheel. If you get 6speed clutch and flywheel you then also need 6speed starter

Easy to fit

An auto prop will fit no need to cut or weld.
The diiff issue comes into play if you're putting a UK box onto a Jap import.

If however you're putting a UK gearbox onto a UK car then theres no problem it'll go straight on as the diffs match.

If you do have issues just make sure your rear diff ratio matches that of the gear box.

I did this three weeks back. into a 2002 Bug eye

The parts you defo need are

The 6 speed box
the 6 Speed Prop
The 6 Speed Cradle
The Gearstick etc that shoudl come with the box
the 6 speed release Fork!

you can us ethe 5 speed flywheel and clutch if you want...

Remember tho if your car is a Uk car you will need a Uk 6 speed. If you get a JDM 6 speed you will need a 3.9 Small rear diff, Lucky Dave from API sorted that out for me

The cradle is identical as is the release fork. The one thing you may have to do is to take a couple of mm off the clutch cylinder pin . I've done a few of these now, on mine and other people's cars. Some fit without hassle some don't

In all cases i've never once had to source a different cradle or release fork.

Agree with Daz on this one no need for cradle or release fork. Fitted a JDM 6 speed to mine and had a R160 3.9 plated diff made by a local rally place as it allowed me to retain my existing shafts and newage wrx hubs.

Bits needed for me were box, linkage, prop and diff.

I stopped breaking 5 speeds every two weeks. For me it also made the car alot more driveable. 4th Gear is tremendous. My only criticism is that the gap between 4th and 5th is larger than the gaps between other gears on the UK box.
The Jap version addresses this.

Agree, only disadvantage of the 6 speeds ratios would be if you were to compete in drag races. It's also a little heavier than the 5 speed, but not a big deal when you consider the extra weight of a full tank of fiuel/passengers etc..

5 speed is 70kg
and
6 speed is 100kg iirc

the 6 speed makes you bust a blood vessle lifting it onto the gearbox hoist , the 5 speed doesnt

Gearbox hoists are for pansies
I did mine on my own on my drive way using axle stands in the rain. That's when you realise just how fooking heavy they are

Daz, when you have spent years doing box changes on your back and you then get a 2 post ramp, you will understand that a 4ft gearbox hoist aint for pansies, its the sensible way

The hard bit is getting the box on the hoist

I ran 350 / 300 on my newage 5 speed (td05 18G) without problems

I then went for methanol / water injection and had it mapped at just over 400 BHP and 350 LBf torque and smashed 3rd gear in two 5 speed gearboxes within months

I now have a jap 6 speed (jap rear diff) and havn't broken anything yet LOL

I guess I just overstepped the mark

Don't get me wrong mate. I've done it both ways and certainly prefer the gearbox hoist method. But sometimes particularly when on my own car I don't have the luxury of a two poster in the barn out back

Arch, power and Torque wise i was around mid 300's of each. I had to get the six speed rebuilt but that was because of a dodgy syncro which was prevalant when I bought the box. After its rebuild it was faultless.

Hi Col,

I've just broken 3rd gear on my MY99 uk wagon and will now go for a 6spd box. I'm in Aberdeen so assume the fitting option isn't possible but would still be interested in a price to supply all required parts.

cheers

James

I have the same problem with mine, the gear linkage is very loose. Think the only way to sort that is to get to quickshift lever.

does the ball at the bottom of the lever seem very loose in the "socket"? does yours whine/whistle in 5th/6th? Mine was out of a 30k car & I wouldn't have a reason to doubt that.

so pissed off I could easily set fire to the ******* thing
