Short ratio's? Anything special?

Short ratio's? Anything special?
My box seems to either have short ratios in it, or my rev counter is wrong 
at 30mph in 3rd, its doing 2500rpm, which is 500rpm more than i thought it would do?
it also gets through the revs VERY quickly.
Part of the reason i think the rev counter is wrong though is because i can rev to 8k?
