It's no stronger than any other box, I run 300 flbs with no issues.

I did three with 350/350 in a year, all were TY752 boxes.

Get a 6 speed.

300 you should be ok, might be yoru driving style (sme folks are harder on gearbox's than others)

6 speeder will change your ratios, only other optin is a pg gearset (or similar)

Main factor here is that we're talking about a 15 year old gearbox.

TBH If you're going to upgrade, prepare for the worst, hope for the best would be my advice!

Well im running in the region of 290-300 at the mo,and am just carrying out all the 'saftey' mods. Done fuel pump, modded oil pump, better brakes and gauges, and in the next couple weeks doing the parallel fuel rail mod, fuel reg, and inlet insulation spacers, just to try and keep things reliable(soon as i get my wrinkle paint delivered!)

Ah, David, just the man! If i was to go the ppg route, could i just fit the gears that are prone to failure,or doesn't it work like that? The box's i killed, one jammed in second, the other i lost 3rd,4th and 5th.
Or, if i went the six speed route, how do the gears compare to the RA close ratio i have,as i quite like it.

No, not really practical as a half set, There are clearance issues between standard gears and PPG if you mix and match. We can do part PPG straight cut and part helical.

PPG gears are in pairs 1st and 2nd as one pair and 3rd /4th as another pair. 5th is usually standard as it rarely takes any load, by the time you get to 5th all the drama is over [ usually ]

If you are doing 1/4 mile stuff, the 6 speed is crap as it puts an extra gearchange into the run. What you have to remember is that a 6 speed puts an extra gear into the middle of where the 5 would have been.

So it is no higher top geared or lower 1st geared. There is a set of 6 speed gears that are in the US Forester, which are longer for 6th - but they are pretty hard to get hold of as a whole box.

Usually PPG is the simpler route, as we build the box to suit the car, rather than some 6 speeders which need a diff change to get them in the car.

Call me if you like, for a talk through of the options.

If you get a UK 6speed with the short 1-4 and longer 5&6 (compared to the shorter 5&6 with a JDM box) then 1-5 is almost identical to the MY95 STI RA 5 speed, bonus is an extra gear for the motorway, best of both worlds!

However there are lots of different RA ratios and final drives but I've lost none of the manic RA gearing with my 6 speed. HTH
