Hi Guys,

I've just starting looking into do a 6 Speed gearbox conversation on my version 3 Import Classic.

Thing is everyone I speak to keeps giving me different advise.

What I want to know is what parts exactly do I need.

I've been told so far I will need the 6 speed gearbox, matching propshaft, diff, front and rear drive shafts, a matching clutchand gearlinkage.

Others have then said I won't need the clutch or propshaft, but I will need the matching hubs, and a hot of varitions inbetween.

What will I need?

Jiff the are 2 options when doing the 6 speed box, this is assuming you get a JDM 6 speed box with a 3.9 final drive.

1) Parts needs gearbox, 5 speed auto prop (6 speed does not fit), gear linkage, rear diff, drive shafts, hubs and rear brembos.
You can re use the 5 speed clutch and you front drive shafts will fit fine.

2) (Cheaper option but a bit more hassle) Parts needed gearbox, 5 speed auto prop, gear linkage and a 3.9 rear diff from a sti version 2 ra.

The diff will allow you to keep your existing drive shafts and hubs but the version 2 sti ra diff is very rare and hard to find.

sorry to butt in but how much woul dthe conversion cost to do on a 99uk turbo? cost if parts? costs for labour? next step for me to take

From what I've been hearing I'd be looking at £2k all in.

£1500 for the bits and £500 for fitting, depending on part prices and labour.

All my quotes and research have been around that mark anyway.

Other than cost, is there any benfit of doing one of the other option? If power is an issue, I'd probably be around the 400bhp.

When I was at 400bhp I ran a P1 gearbox with an uprated exedy clutch, also on an sti 3 with no problems. If you are not planning on going above this then get an sti5/6 or P1 gearbox, if you plan to go further then your options are limited to a 6 speed or PPG depending on how much you want to spend.

Would I have to convert anything else other than the box is I went for the P1 box? Or would I still need to convert the prop shaft etc?

As your car is wrx you will need the gearbox, diff and possibly the shafts thats it.

see from what i read that yes teh p1/sti5 box aer the strongest of the lot but all depending on how its been treated is how long it woul dlast at that power, and by the time you have put the p1 box in you might aswell of gone the extra as if it goes the cost of 2 would be more than the 6 speed in place!

TBH, I don't think that the p1 boxes are physically any stronger that normal V5 boxes.
Maybe the ratios load the boxes up less. Dunno.

Anyway.
I'm currently the owner of 1 '98 box and 2 '99 boxes.
All of which have one fault or another. The plan is to build one decent '99 box while the '98 box dies a slow noisy death in the car.

Then save for a PPG gearset.
The only down side with the 6 speed conversion is that they're heavier. And hassle to source all the parts and then fit.
At least with the PPG set you KNOW that the gears are new and will take any abuse you care to dish out.
But. I may change my mind about the PPG gearset and go for a 6speeder if one comes along at the right price when I have the money. I would quite like that extra gear just for pose value.

The P1/sti 5/6 gearbox is much stronger than a standard uk box due to gear thickness being larger and being heat treated in the factory.

My P1 box held up to 20000 miles of 389bhp and 363 lb/ft no problem, a uk box would not last 30 seconds at this level of tune.

I managed to pick up a 6 speed jdm box with linkage, prop and diff for £450 from a member on here. So there is bargains to be had.

Thats unreal!!!!!!!!!! I've seen then go for £1k to £2k, but never that low. He must have needed the money big time, either that or it needed a rebuild.

Posted on my brothers account before, well the gearbox did not need a rebuild as its in the car now and handling 440bhp and 385lbft no problems

i have a 6 speed prop on my classic,i think an auto prop is the same size as a six speed prop standard five speed prop is to long, there are bargains out there i picked up a six speed with prop off ebay for £450

I started looking into this for my 97 Sport, the idea being to gain 6th for motorway runs. One advantage is that I believe the Sport has the correct rear diff ratio so it's just a matter of getting the box and the propshaft.

However I found out that the 6spd weighs about 30kg more which is a big disadvantage with just 120bhp to pull it around. Also, I hate gearboxes with Reverse in the wrong place and silly collars to lift.

I don't know if it would require a clutch swap as I never got that far.
