Default gearbox problem...please help

Ive just returned from the nurburgring and my box has developed a problem on my 98 type r.

Starting to crunch between 3rd and 4th as though synchro is going and also getting harder to select 5th.

Is this the synchro going or could it be a slave cylinder prob, pedal adjustment or cooked fluid.

Not too knowledgeable on the scoob boxes so any suggestions appreciated.

If the box is knackered , how easy is it to fit a later 6 speed box into a classic and can i still use the DCCD with this upgrade.

Otherwise who is a good company to rebuild my current box.

You've probably suffered from the " big nut coming undone " syndrome. The gears are retained on the mainshaft by a big nut and they work loose over the years. If caught soon enough it can sometimes be tightened up and all is OK.

If you are unlucky then we'll need to replace synchro cone or two.

Unfortunately on the '98 boxes the box needs to come out to do the job. On a '99 or later, it can be done in the car.

In the car can be done for the lucky ones for £200.00 + VAT

When it needs to have the box out, then it will be £400.00 + VAT

Synchro cones vary in price and can be as low as 26 quid and as high as 119 quid for the two piece ones. Depends what you have fitted.

In any case I doubt you need to do more than a good quality repair to your box at the moment.

Call me for a talk through.

Good Luck David APi
