Default diff problems

hi
this is an excellent site.
im new here and need some help please.
i have a legacy 2.0 turbo estate, import auto, k reg, before i bought it they had a new gearbox fitted and since then i get a bad grinding, scraping, clonking sound from rear and it vibrates through the car.
really feels like something is going to go bang.
im not sure but i was told it was the rear diff.
bought one for an import auto on ebay.
fitted it and the noise is still there.
could it be that the ratio`s are different?
the numbers on the gearbox are TZ102YB3AA-G4, 639691.
the numbers on the diff are 314, 89, KN51
any help is much appreciated.

Check that the exhaust is not catching on propshaft, or propshaft is not rubbing anything. Daft as it sounds what about oil in box have you checked it?

thanks for reply drewski.
exhaust is okay.
prop is okay.
when jacked up at the rear, if you spin one wheel the other moves opposite way which i believe is right.
lying underneath with it jacked up i spun the passsenger wheel slightly and the drive shaft one the drivers side coming out of the diff seems to spin very rough, juddery, not smooth spinning.
it looks like the cogs in the diff are not connecting properly.
if i try and pull the drive shaft out of the diff it does move quite a bit.
should you be able to physically pull on it?
sorry for my lack of knowledge.
