Default JDM 6 speed conversion

I'm looking at changing my std 5 spd UK2000 MY99 to a JDM 6 speed out of a an STI v7 that I've been offered.

couple of questions, what do I need for the conversion, all the driveshafts and all the hubs?

next question, what will 6th gear be like compared to 5th in my present box?

thanks in advance

You will need the gearbox, gear linkage, diff, propshaft, drive shafts, hubs and rear brakes from the V7 to do the complete conversion.

The cheaper but slightly harder way is to find a 3.9 diff from a version 2 sti ra (think there is one being broken in the for sale general section) then you can retain your hubs and shafts.

The 6th gear at 70 mph shows 3200 rpm on my car, just have a look at what your car is doing in 5th and compare it to this.

thanks for the fast reply Banny!

Its going to be mated to a 2.5 lump, will this be a good companion for it?

do I need all th ehubs & driveshafts or just the back ones?

thanks

It should go very nicely with the 2.5 engine and you will only need the back ones.

thanks again. I was worried it would have ratios too short.

ok, so I think I've sorted an STI RA 3.9 rear diff, can I use the prop off the JDM STI to mate the diff to the 6 speeder?

As long as the prop is 6 speed you should be fine.

What year is the 6 speed box as you may need to change the front shafts?

Be carful about the prop, its the right length but the flange is drilled differently to mate with the R180 diff. The STI RA diff is r160 and holes are on a different PCD. However you can drill the flange to the correct hole PCD so not a problem, just a heads up that its not a direct fit. A classic auto prop is a direct fit to an R160. HTH

As far as I am aware the final drive on the WRX, JDM STi and indeed the UK STi are all the same.

The JAP STi has more evenly spaced gearing while the UK box has slightly sorter ratios beforehitting 6th.

I have been told that the Jap box is better for higher power applications as it gives a better spread of gears to accellerate through. The UK STi lower gears are more flattering when used in lower power situations.

This is my take on it anyway............... which is why I've opted for the Jap box on my TD05 18G bugeye

The uk sti has a 1.1.1 drop gear and a final drive of 3.54 where as the jap sti has a 1.1 drop gear and a final drive of 3.9.

The ratios 1-4 are the same for both uk and jdm cars but the jdm box has a shorter 5th and 6th.

I would use a prop from a auto impreza as it is a perfect fit and can be had for about £20.

DJ

I'm converting a MY02 bugeye to a Jap non-dccd Sti 6 speed and all I need are the gearbox and the rear diff ....all being sorted by API

Banny

AFAIK the Jap box has wider spacing for gears 2 to 5 to take into account the gentlmans' agreement that the output is 280 BHP..more than the Uk..... The UK box having shorter gearing in lower gears to keep the accleration despite the lower BHP.... I must have been mistaken LOL

Gears 1-4 are the same for both boxes, UK have a longer 5th and 6th.

How did you get on with the JDM box, about to do the same conversion and am also worried that the ratios may be too short on a 2.5 ltr??

Wow.. this thread has arisen from the dead

Igot on pretty well with it for a while, but then became very tired of the low ratio 6th - 70mph was around 3000 rpm. So I changed the ratios for Forester STi ratios - not cheap, but a massive improvement & 70mps is now 2500 rpm & the car has much longer legs through the gears.

Personally for me, the JDM box is wrong for a 2.5, but if you are doing sprints or hill climbs then its awesome.

Hope that helps.

Thanks
Not for sprints or hill climbs but for trackdays and Nurburgring.
6th in the JDM box would be almost the same as 5th in the current box.
The car is not a dialy driver but is driven too and from circuits.
Did you do any trackdays whilst you had the 2.5 connected upto the JDM ratios?

Yes I went to the Nurburgring in it & the drive was tiring, however the ride round the ring was fun.
