Question

Simple question, need a boost gage, is it best to work in psi or bar?

Figure psi is more precise (its increments are smaller)

The choice I had was 1 PSI or 0.5 bar increments! Guess which I chose.

I think it comes down to preference. You brits seem to prefer lambda and bar where I prefer KPa and AFR and the majority of those south of us (Americans) prefer PSI and AFR.

The precision of your meter is dependant on the meter.

Cool

Funny looking kid normal for Kirkcaldy (FLKNFK) apparently used to be an abbreviation in medical notes according to some medical lecturer in Edinburgh. I used to work in Forth Park but never wrote this in any notes. All the babies were lovely honest! Anyway I think it is cruel! But very funny and possibly true Fifers are a weird lot. I live here (for now) but am actually English for my sins. Anyway, how do we drag this back to PSI and bar?

my mum and dad are english... in fact i'm the only one in my whole family who wasn't born in Scotland!

I know a doctor who's just moved to aussie who worked in leven for a year... they all used to put 'Kappa Positive' on their patients notes if they were of the 'Ned' variety... apparently a common one is that.

Oh yeah.. back to PSI...

what PSI will my normally aspirated 155 2.0 TS 26v be putting out?

I know one who worked in Leven for a year (MIH) flatmate for five years and he was my best man at my wedding but has now gone to NZ not Aus - same chap?! I took his dad out for a blast in my Scooby and had a fabulous launch at 5000rpm - he LOVED it. Small world.

26 valves?

Getting back to pressures, at my school 1 Kg/cm2 = 14.7 psi
Although it is frequently rounded down to 14.5 for easy translation.

Ah - but 1 kg/cm is slightly less than 1 bar....makes you wish the manufacturers would settle on a single unit

Interesting question, this conversion rate...

I have just tried five different conversion sites on the net (www.google.com for "pressure conversion") and found that the answer seems to be somewhere in the area of 14.5psi and 14.695948776psi. What international standards institution site might we find the definitive standard conversion rate from? Any ideas?

Cool

"1kg/cm2 = 0.98 Bar, 1 Bar = 14.50377 PSI"

I thought WREXY had it best as above?

But don't know the answer Moray - how about searching on SI unit conversions?

BTW I was TTP with my last post! I could never be that accurate it would make me look stupid Only silly people quote to far too many sig figs to try and look clever

Cool

Just went to National Physics Laboratory site. Used SI Unit "Pascal"s to check the conversion rate. Thought I could trust NPL unti to pascal conversion rates... maybe I'm to trusting.

Anyways...
1Bar = 100,000 Pa (exact by NPL)
1PSI = 6794.76 Pa (rounded by NPL)

so 100,000Pa / 6794.76Pa gives a ratio of 14.50377 (According to Intel and Microsoft Excel).

Thus, according to the NPL, Microsoft and Intel, the conversion is, roughly speaking, about 14.50377PSI to 1Bar

I would like to know why 14.7ish is also in circulation as a figure... I suspect the americans have something to do with it.

1 atmosphere is 14.69595 PSI. Its units of measure is ATM on my unit converter. Apparently it is the international standard atmosphere which is 101325 Pa. So there, **** knows what a bar is then.

1 Atmosphere = 14.696 psi
1 Bar = 14.503 psi
1kg/cm2 = 14.223 psi

So suggest you check what your gauge is calibrated in before converting !

Get a gauge thats reads in P.S.I. Its a lot easier to set up the max boost on them.
Also none of the aftermarket gauges are 100% accurate, so a gauge that reads in P.S.I, and normally callibrated in increments of 1`P.S.I will give you more accuracy (safety) than one in BARS with a greater scale, due to the inherent conversion of Bars to P.S.I.
Just my two cents worth.
I got a good deal on Autometer boost and air/fuel gauges from

http://www.extrememotorsports.com/g2cat/bstgauge.htm

Autometer -30-0-30 PSI Boost Gauge - White Face(Product# EXM0607)
Autometer Air/Fuel Gauge - White Face (Product# EXM0303)

They match the original cars white face gauges perfectly!
