Have been experimenting with different types of fuel to see which suits my MY01 STI RA best. Shell locally launched their new RON98 "V-Power" recently, thought I'd give it a try. Ping BIG TIME! 3rd gear pull coming off a highway off ramp - definitely no intercooler heat soak prior. Tried again, Ping again! Both my ears and the trusty Knocklink sensed it. Wasn't even that hot - maybe 30degC out. Looks like I'll be going back to Caltex then.

My question is: In the UK, the long standing issue is the available pump fuel quality, RON97 being tops. How do STI owners in the UK over the years counter knock? Surely you can't be adding octane booster with each tank?
Do fuel catalysts help? Do you experience knock much more frequently during the summer months? (trying to see how much of an issue outside temp is.)

Many tks.

I (and many/most import owners) do add OB with every fill-up.
I use Millers which raises the RON by 2 according to the manufacturer.
I also currently use Shell Optimax which has 98+ Ron (typically 98.6 apparently) although I still put OB in with this as well.

I can't say that I am getting any det with either fuel/OB combination. I do not however have any knock sensing equipment in my car, which of course I should have, and rely upon super-hearing to detect the sound of det above my exhaust roar!

Is that true? - STI import owners, do you add Octane Booster with every tankful?

Wow, talk about commited to performance!

I think any Scooby owner is committed to performance as soon as they buy one!
The main reason is that STi imports are "designed" to run on Japanese 100 RON fuel and adding OB takes us closer to the original fuel spec. This is often out of a sense of engine protection as well as performance.
Consider also that OB can be got as cheap as £2.50 per bottle (which increases 50 litres by 2 RON)so cost is pretty negligable.

So, which OB's have we tried, and which do we find the best?

Tks.

I have used Proboost and Millers Octane Plus.
Millers is about 1/3 the price (per mix) and just as good in my experience.
There are others on the market but I haven't tried them myself.
