I get a nasty knocking noise when half lock or more steering left or right ,when driving slowly and only after the car has been driven about 15 miles .gearbox specialist thinks its the diff in the gearbox. now a whining noise has started as soon as i start driving ,it makes the car sound like its electric, happens even when coasting with the engine off .and is not constant it is like this whinewhinewhinewhinewhine not wwwwwwwwwhhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnn nnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeeee if you no what i meen.

any ideas ,is the gearbox ****ed are the two not related ???

If your box has a chipped tooth or other broken bits, I feel the noise would be there all the time.
If you drop the gearbox oil then see if there is clear oil or 'bits' in it. If bit you know the box needs coming out...

With the noise you describe, perhaps a box bearing esp as it is worse when hot and oil is thinner.

Unless there is something external to blame (pro shaft etc) then the only way to find out is to open the box. quite a job.

My wheel bearing sounded like this and transmitted noise through the shaft so that it sounded like the gearbox. It was more a whine come squealing noise though.

From your [ very accurate ] noise decription that sounds like one of the drop gear bearings has failed hence the whine, whine, whine noise. The juddering is due to the misalignment of the drop gear shaft putting strain on the centre diff, which will give up fairly soon too.

It could be fixed, just by changing the drop gear bearings set with any luck.

But I would offer that as a start point as it is relatively cheap to do. [ About £200.00 ] If they don't do it then it'll be box out and a full strip.

Worst cost £650.00 + VAT for a recon box from me.
