Gear ratios and brakes........
Hi all......
I have a version 3 type r with the short ratios as im sure most of you are aware its not that great on a long run...in 5th i mean on the motorway.
Anyway what is the best way to go 5th gear if you like??? from a uk car
Can you just change the 5th ratio or is there more to it than that ??
Any sound advice from people that have a conversion done if you like.
Anyone know much about bias valves can i fit one ?? big brakes on the front just want to get the backs working more...
Thanks all in advance..

The UK car has a taller fifth than yours as I recall (charts at home) as it has the 'wide ratio' box and yours the close ratio, but as your FDR is 4.444 versus the UK cars 3.9:1 yours will never get close to the UK car unless you change the FDR's as well....

I did this on my old Type R V4.
You need the 5th gear and synchro from a 97/98 V3 or 4 UK spec Gearbox. Parts are about 100 quid new.
At 4000 rpm you will jump from 78 to 88 mph, which makes all the difference.
Also subaru used the same 5th gear ratios in the V-Limited gearboxes.
It is difficult job though as you need a hydralic puller to do it.
As its a gear box off job, its worth changing the clutch at the same time.
Len at Subaru4 U is an expert at this conversion AFAIK.

A bias valve will only shut the brakes down and make them work less , you only need a bias valve on if you overbrake the rear and they need shutting down.
To upgrade the rears try either fitting the bugeye 2 pots with 290mm discs , or the brembo 2 pots with 316mm discs.
I make fitting kit to fit either kit on , and this should bring the rears working in balance with the fronts
Cheers Ian

Take the bias valve off for more rear braking. A guy here that knows what he is doing with Scoobs did it for me in about an hour and a half and for just a little wonga my brakes were transformed.
