Peeps,

It would appear that the Jap cars have a three piece exhaust system, and the Euro WRX's have a four piece (downpipe, baffle pipe, centre CAT and back box).

This potentially will cause probs with fitting Jap spec exhaust unless they are made specifically for the Euro WRX.

Assuming all the mounts are in the right pace for the back box (which I have confirmed) and the decat centre (tbc - tomorrow), then all you will need is a custom link pipe to replace the baffle pipe that connects to the downpipe.

I'll keep you posted, but I hoping to work with someone over the next couple of weeks to sort this out (wish I didn't have to work - hence a delay).

I'm hoping to confirm with the manufacturer that they only make 1 version of the exhaust in question, before proceeding, this should be confirmed on Monday.

If anyone else is experiencing the same, and would like to know how I get on drop me a line.

Rgds, Alex

Right guys, this is what I know so far, I've layed the OEM system (last two pieces) out on the floor along side the HKS system and this is what I've found (facts):

- the HKS Ti Tip Hyper Muffler system that we have is approx 4"s too long to connect to the baffle pipe.

- the baffle pipe is 24"s long and connects to the downpipe.

- the HKS backbox hangs perfectly on the car (I've tested this).

- comparing the mount points on the decat pipe against the OEM cat pipe, they look to be in exactly the same places (note the backboxes were used in the comparison to make sure all is well).

- the HKS backbox has a shorter pipe than the OEM bb, so will not fit on the OEM cat pipe (pointless anyway, but just so you know). The HKS centre is slightly longer from the mount point back to compensate for this.

Summary - there is no reason why the HKS shouldn't fit assuming a suitable replacement for the baffle box can be constructed!

And... I have already spoken to a supplier and they have said that as long as the centre mounts OK, they can easily make up a replacement for the baffle pipe, the best way is for me to go to them and it to be built on the car. Soo, I have to sort out some time off in the next week (most likely monday week, hopefully, depends on the suppliers commitments).

I have taken pictures of the systems layed out and but have no means to upload them for you to view (suggestions?).

Now, I need to confirm with HKS that they only make ONE version of the of this system for the MY'01 (Jap or otherwise). If yes, then it is safe to say that the downpipe on the Jap cars is approx 20"s longer than the UK dp.

After which i will make arrangements for the custom baffle pipe replacement to be made up, and confirm (via this thread) which date it will be being done on.

Anyone that is interested in have a copy of this solution, let me know (via adelasalle@hotmail.com).

Rgds, Alex

PS...

Euro (well a UK) WRX STi - I've physically checked under one of these today, and at first glance it is using the SAME system as the WRX Type UK, hence you will have the same problem with these.

Alex

Nice to see your using your house and not the garage to take pictures of the exhausts

Sorry to be thick but what the hell is that chamber above the HKS exhaust?

Thanks

Nathan..

Alex
Looks like I will have the same problem
What length is the centre pipe so we can check we have all got the same.
I know I am clutching at straws but it may be there are 2. One for UK and one for Jap spec.
Well lets hope so as easiest solution.

All the best

Alex and I compared centre section pipes and found them to be the same.

Mine measures around 58 inches, a quick measurement so forgive the odd quarter of an inch.

On the HKS muffler book you get with all the bolts and pieces there are two codes the first is GH-GDB in in the box at the bottom 3106-SF008VTU.

If this is what is being shipped by HKS as an MY01 part, then our various suppliers can't be blamed.

That chamber is a resonator - certainly an unusual design, and it explains why the HKS exhausts often hang so low!

Alex

Good luck in getting your custom midpipe made up.

I own a 98MY UK car, and my HKS Hiper backbox and de-cat centre, fits perfectly without any modifications. I think they may have different models based on MY (as I was asked for the MY when I bought the system). Either that, or for some reason, the Ti Hiper has different measurements to the Hiper?!?!?!?

Good luck Alex. Let me know.

This is fun isn't it chaps!

I've not been able to confirm yet that HKS only make one system for the MY'01 per design hence the Jap / Euro aspect being the issue... watch this space, I'll post as soon as i have.

Rgds, Alex

Confirmed, HKS make only one version of the exhaust, it fits the Jap cars, hence won't fit ours. They are being very helpful currently.

More to follow soon, there will be a solution,

Update

I've spoken again to a manufacturer, they will be getting to back to me to confirm a date hopefully this week, for me to visit and an adaptor be made up (and cloned for PeteUK300, Jason H and MATTel once the design is finalised - they will want your money prior to this, so I'll send you details of who to speak to).

So if any others have bought from any suppliers recently and are interested in an adaptor, let me know.
