Default AP Brake design issue?

I get a sound of pads moving in the calipers when I drive
Now I thought it was my car and have tried numerous pads, looked at perfect alignment with spacers, etc BUT the sound never goes away

When you depress the Brake pedal there is no sound at all

I have just driven 2 other cars with a similar AP set up and they have exactly the same issue - at low speeds you get the godamn awful sound of the brakes moving against the Disc, sounds quite bad (not a squeling sound) more of a clonking sound

One thing that all cars have in common is that the Discs are Grooved - So my next set of discs will be the ones with the holes in!!

Anyone else experienced this and is it the same with the holed discs?

My AP set up has drilled discs with Ds2500 pads. No sounds what so ever.

My brother has used both drilled and grooved discs on his car, and there was no difference between the two.

Yes - thats what my mechanic told me
There is also too much play in the driveshaft entering the gearbox

I'll put £100 on the anti rattle plate being on the wrong way round..!

The anti rattle plate, which keeps pads pushed into caliper should be convex (ie curved in and not out IYSWIM..?

This is a VERY common mistake, even mechanics often get it wrong as it looks like it should go the wrong way round..!

Found this, which explains above:

http://www.apracing.com/roadcar/brakekit/p14006.pdf

Just to add the only time I've ever had my AP's rattle was when one of these plates was put back on incorrectly..!

I do get a bit of a clunk when I reverse, but this is normal and doesn't bother me. You should not be getting any rattling whilst moving, as long as the plate is fitted correctly..!

You may well find the same problem if there is corrosion buildup on the inner lip(s) of the discs. The high spots on that can catch the pads and rattle them making the noise and sometimes some light judder. Fix is new discs, or possibly skim the inner edges of the discs (both sides of both discs).

Re Anti-rattle plate I'll recheck as have had that issue before - then you really can tell. Mine is more of a thud, thud, thud sound as the wheels go round - thud is really no louder when the car goes faster and there is no issue with CV Joints, bearings or hubs.

Discs are brand new - I just changed them
I'm going to get a new drive shaft to check as when I push this at the gearbox end there is a lot of play which kind of mimics the sound of the pads moving against the disc

In fact if I move the wheel a few inches back and forth when its jacked up I can hear the noise which is the exact same sort of sound of the play from the driveshaft into the gearbox

That said two local sti classics near me have exactly the same issue so I'd be surprised if it was the driveshaft - then again you never know

I know drilled ones crack thats why I have always had grooved

I used to have ds2500 - Maybe I should have stuck with them as had very little issue with them - had ds3000 - Never again, as they eat discs and now I have got Pagid blue - cant remember code which are a lot harder than the ds2500 but they are far better on track

I took one of my anti rattle plates out, stuck it in a vice and - 'tapped' it with a hammer.
It bent enough to hold the pad in place. IYSWIM

Make sure you use some thread lock when putting them back in though.

Before, my 4 post used to clunk on initial raising of the clutch.

As I said, the only noise I get is a very light clunk when I brake in reverse (only once as pads move backwards) and the same again on the first application of brakes when moving forwards (once only).

Strange really as the OEM setup used to be exactly the same (maybe a bit worse) and it is a common problem with scoobs..!

I'm going to mess with the ARattle plate more then
I notice the brake movement on speeds up to 40mph - they are bloddy annoying and the clunk is loud especially when vibrating off other things - like housing estates/high streets

It has to be the pads in the Caliper as there is no noise when I press the brakes to decelerate
