Default Gear selectrion and cold weather

Since having my engine rebuilt about 4 months ago it has been more difficult to select 1st and 2nd gear. Now the cold weather is up on us it is even more difficult. The problem is most noticable when selecting a gear to more off or moving from 3rd down to 3rd while dececcerating.

The gearbox is filled with standard oil amd is up to the fill mark. The car got a new clutch with the rebuild.

What could the problem be?

3rd down to 3rd? If you mean 3rd to 1st, 1st gear is not designed to be selected whilst moving.
As above, castrol syntrax driveline really does help notchy boxes.

I'd expect it from cold. Time the gearshifts better - matching revs with what they will be in the next gear and ease the gear selector into the gear with slight pressure allowing the sycros to spin up the gears so it'll slot in on its own accord.(i.e feel it into gear, not push in into gear )

Letting up the clutch slightly whilst in neutral before depressing again to get into the next gear will help (sort of semi double de-clutching) - especially if one wants to use 1st whilst on the move

There could be a clue in the original post re- re-built engine! The box has been off so there could be a clutch adjustment issue (is it still the original clutch?) The symptoms also suggest the possibility of the clutch not disengaging fully (clutch drag)

Well what would you do to take a very tight turn, hairpin say, or for that matter approach a set of traffic lights on red, only for them to change whilst you're at a walking pace..?

Stop, pop 1st then move off or maybe try and pull away in second..?

As said, 1st can be 'hard' to select when moving, but only if you don't match the revs or you're doing 30mph or something silly..!

I had a new clutch fitted with the rebuild. Can't remember what it was though, it wasn't OEM, sounded like exedy or similar. I think you maybe onto something here, it never used to do it before the rebuild. I'll get it checked at next service in Jan.

Thanks
