Hi i have a type R v4 and have just had it mapped by Andy Forrest and am told its running around 340/350bhp torque not known, the clutch has started slipping mostly in 5th gear so im putting a new 1 in aswel as a flywheel. Can i run std clutch/flywheel at this power and will it last or is it best to uprate ifso what to. Also would it be worth putting a lightened/balanced flywheel on or best to stick to std flywheel.

Sorry for all the questions just dont know where im at with clutches.

If the clutch is gonna come out, uprate it mate! If its started to slip since its been mapped but never did before hand then thats normally an indication that its not really up to the hike in power. I know a lot of people get the pink box (stage 1??) exedy clutch and say they are very good. And I would definately change the flywheel for a lightened and balanced one whilst your at it. I spoke to David at APi about this when I had my car serviced by them last week, and they can lighten and balance you standard flywheel for £150 I think which is very good. Give them a call.

The API flywheel is just great, invest in one. The Exedy clutch he sells is not the 'Ebay Special' but a solid job.
I have an AP organic in my Sti, but would not hesitate to use the API unit.

 

I'm running a Helix group N clutch and fidanza lightweight flywheel. The clutch is really nice, is easily coping with 350/350 and I've every expectation it will cope with 400/400 when I up the boost.

Nice clutch as well, not jerky or grabby, nice for the road.

 

so dont buy the 1 off ebay for £150 and get exedy 1off API. Are the 1s on ebay just a copie.

Will the car need mapping again 1s ightened flywheel goes in or will it be ok.

So a exedy off APi or a helix group N

The exedy clutches for £150 on ebay are basically standard clutches but branded as exedy. A proper stage 1 exedy clutch will cos you around double that.

I very much doubt the car will need remapping with a lightened flywheel, that basically just allows the engine to rev a lot quicker as there is not as much weight on the flywheel for the engine to turn.

Either an exedy stage 1 or the helix is gonna be a very good clutch, I've had both clutches on previous cars and I must admit that I did rate the helix a LOT more than the exedy. The helix is very light on the pedal and took every bit of power and abuse I threw at it.

 

Agree - helix is a nice clutch. Surprised more people don't use 'em

im in the same boat mate,,,mines slipping in 5th at about 70/80,,,,

iv been ringing round all day ,and iv managed to find my self a good deal,,a helix one rated to 420 ft £ torque
from HDC SUBARU for £725 fitted (this includes a flywheel skim, all oils and vat)

ye my local garage said they would do it for me for £200 if i get the bits. so on the look out for the parts now.

Wheres the place at were your getting yours done. is it a helix group N clutch cos thats what im after or a stage 1 exedy organic.

Theres a billet steel light flywheel on ebay now for about £130 but its from Japan with £70 postage im thinking of ordering that.

im getting mine from and fitted from hdc subaru in hebden bridge 01422846868,,,its a group n clutch kit ,and can take up to 420 lb of torque,
they is a cheaper one thats rated up to 340 lb torque

iv been told that this is on the same par as a ap clutch ,but gives a better ride on normal day to day driving

it was £320 plus vat and im sure he said the torque was around 400.

 

iv been on the case trying to find a cheap good one for a week now ,,and thats a good price mate

iv been offerd about 5 around the £350 mark ,but they are only rated up to 340 lb torque
im running 330 lb torque now ,so iv gone for the next step as that one of been on the limit

just make sure mate that it will take the power your wanting to put through it ,,or a few months down the line you will be buying a new one

I'd have to recommend the Exedy Uprated Organic.

I broke the centres out of two brand new AP racing organic clutches and a second hand exedy plate from the scrappers went on to do 20,000 more miles at the same power. (360bhp)
