The nut has a thin ring of steel machined into it. When the nut is done up tight in the factory, the ring is 'dented' into the slot in the drive shaft so providing a locking of the nut on the shaft.

When undoing the nut, you have to open the dented ring free of the slot with a simple screwdriver, and then simply unscrew the nut.

The nut is not done up very tight.
I did mine up to 90 lbft torque, then dented the ring back into the shaft keyway. When you take the wheel off you will see all this in front of you.
Graham.
