How to identify diff?
How can I identify which diff a car has. If I look at the diff what markings am I looking for. I want to purchase a second hand diff and need to make sure Im getting the right onw. Ive found a chart (from another thread). Which describes which gearbox goes with which diff, just need to know how to spot a rear diff.
Take the rear cover off the diff.
Rotate the Crownwheel until you can see the ratio printed on the side of it.
You will see something like... 39:10 ...giving you the CWP ratio

He is right:
For just the ration you can drop the oil out and mark the crown wheel tooth that can be seen through the filler plug hole with Tipex. Rotate the prop shaft counting exactly the turns till the tipex shows again in exactly the same place in the hole (surprisingly easy to do).
For a '3.9' diff the prop will turn 3.9 times.
Froa 4:444 it will turn 4.4 times etc.
To know what limited slip diff is in ther you will need to remove the diff itself and the alloy cover. If it has a plated LSD then get a mate to hole one rear wheel while you try to turn the other (car jacked-up).
If you cant turn it then the diff is plated.
