Default 5.4Kg Flywheel to light for everyday..

.. driving?

I have been offered a Competion Clutch Flywheel 5.4kg for a VERY good price for my 2001 bugeye WRX, but I'm not sure how it will effect my everyday driving. My car will be roughly 300/300 with an uprated exedy clutch.

Thanks for the advice.

Agree with Neil, I use a 5KG one as a daily driver with no problems.

You need a couple of hundred RPM extra to pull away but thats no problem. Still idles normally, will still bimble in traffic with no throttle in 1st without stalling.

Just don't think it will give you loads of extra power as it won't.

Any noticeable benefit to engine response?

I've been pondering a Roger Clark 6.1Kg flywheel. Anyone have experience of these?

hmm, not sure now! I don't want to have to do this twice.

The exedy clutch is only the next one up from standard OE so not sure, was told that the car might run like a dog with it along with the light clutch and lightened pulleys.

Anymore ideas?

On my old P1 I ran a AP Organic Clutch, RCM Flightened flywheel and RCM light weight pulleys. I used the car everyday without any problems. You'll be fine, just like the others have said.

Spooky:
Just driven back in my Sti with a new API lightened flywheel (about 8Kg) and you really can feel the difference, and not change is pulling away in traffic.
Impressed!

I've got a really light one in the evo, circa 5kg, and its an absolute pig on the road- coupled with the twin plate paddle it really is horrid around town.

I have an 8kg (ish) fly in the Impreza and its quite pleasent.

That must be the paddle clutch more than anything?

I had one in my 911 and it soon came out again. Terrible in traffic, wore out pdq and roached my (stock) flywheel that is about 5Kg on a 911 to start with.

Stock clutch and wheel restored everything!

Possibly- they were both in when I got it. Its real hiccuppy at low speeds if that makes sense and I can't put that down to anything other than the flywheel mass and lack of inertia.

That's right and the take-up was juddery etc if you were gentle.
Paddles are for racing really.

tbh its not really an everyday car- just for sprints and the occassional trackday, and the clutch / flywheel perform admirably- I've been using it every day just lately though

Simon, aren't you using some lairy cams on the Evo aswell?

I've got a 4.5kg billet flywheel on my 2.5 and it's fine pottering around, organic clutch though.

Andrew...

Yep, the whole lot's a bit lairy... too lairy if I'm honest

Jumping from the Evo to the 2.5 Impreza, the STi is just so much nicer to drive and more responsive- the powerband is far too narrow on the Evo- but it was set up for track by the previous owner.

I've got a 4.7 Kg with organic clutch and uprated pulley setup...
At first I found it a tad different as you have to pull away with slightly more revs (very slight though or you'll be on boost too early a end up sideways!), only ever cut out once on me when I was "re-learning" to drive it...its fine now though.

Also, did make tickover slightly more lumpy but nothing compared to lary cams (I've now got both)...

Go for it!

An 8kg flywheel is likely a re-machined std cast one? Most billet steel flywheels are 4.5 - 6kg. Mine was an ASPerformance machined std flywheel at 8 kg and is fine.

I also have Xtreme Scoobies alloy lightweight pulleys and have no problems with stalling or pulling off. I DID feel a bit of faster response from the engine after these were fitted, and seemedto spool up better too.

Not a fan of the Exedy clutches, had problems with the 2 of them ( although one was most likely down to poor install by subaru dealer! ) and have much prefered the AP Organic (and lasted longer ( over 3 years ) at much higher power/torque outputs! ( 360/325 & now 430/360 on new turbo and injectors etc. )) for feel and durability!

Mine was an API stock/machined one, so about 8Kg.

Certainly agree with the AP Organic Clutch comments. Mine is fantastic, 150+ drag starts now, but i am a bit gentle compared to some on here...
