Gearbox problem
My 3rd and 4th gear changes have always been 'notchy' even after replacing the synchros.
My gear box has started crunchy when changing up into 4th and sometimes drops out of 5th gear when cruising?
It has also dropped out of 4th mid corner???
advice please

Is it a 1998 ish UK car?
If so it probably has the 'big nut' loose next to 5th.
suggest you call David at Welcome to the API website as they do a lot of box rebuilds/fixes.
No bullsh!t company.
Just done my transmission.

Its a 97 sti, type R,
it had a 3rd/4th synchro replacement about 18k ago, but does get used hard when on track, done 6 track days it it now.
Does the above info apply to jap cars?

API have just done my Type R box, same year i have in my hillclimb car.
They found a problem in the same area.
The big Nut is part of the design for all tears, 98/99 were simply more susceptible to it coming loose = 5th drifting out of mesh.
Still think you should call API.

Its in garage stripped at the moment, mechanic has found 'the' nut off as the tab washer hadn't been deformed correctly on it so it worked loose, apparantly no other visible damage, just waiting for new gaskets to arrive so it can be put back together for the weekend, fingers crossed...alot
