6 speed conversion
hi, i have recentley had a 6 speed box fitted to my 1997 uk impreza including gear linkage propshaft and rear diff, everything fitted ok apart from where the driveshafts go into the gearbox it leaks gear oil, do i need 6 speed driveshafts aswell? or is there another way round this.

Surprised by that from what I've read on the subject.

it simplier to change the 5 speed gear box driveshaft oil seal i think. The oil seal on the 6 speed tranny is not right for the 5 speed axle

Not bad really, means your pride and joy can now go down the motorway at lower revs and keep the lovely short ratios.
Thinking about this my self but just brought my house and struggling to keep my scooby as it is
will be in the future though. just saving now
Cheers

I thought that too, but it turns out 6th is actually marginally shorter than a UK 5th (on a 5sp).
So you actually have to rev slightly higher.
Unless you get a box out of one of the new MY07 (possibly MY06 aswell) 2.5 STI's as they have longer ratios

oh right, didnt know that. i only want a 6th gear so it doesnt rev so high down the motorway mainly because i have a Ra which is very short ratios. oh well looks like more research for me then lol.
Thanks mate

probably prefect for an RA as i would imagine your 5th is shorter than a UK 5th by quite a bit. So would probably be like just adding another gear onto your short ratios.
