Question Quick Q - Gearbox life and Shortshift?

On a classic WRX a short shift is a really good mod. It improves the feel of the gear change no end.

On my last WRX MY 94 My gearbox threw a bearing not long after it was fitted. Then again I got through another box 18months previous. However I used to drive the car very hard - so perhaps it was just that.

However someone else also mentioned that a short shift can shorten the life of a gearbox.

So after all that.
Does fitting a short shift shorten the life of the box - or is that just drivel??

I think drivers shorten the life of the gearbox!
You wanna treat it rough then you will 'reap what you sow'.
You keep launching and trying to ram home the gears all the time then what do you expect?

I've heard this before. Someone thought that fitting a shortshift would damage the 'box due to the stick moving faster than the synchro could cope with.

I have also been told this is rubbish as all a shortshift is is a shorter stick poking out the end you hold onto and not inside so no damage should occur.

Haven't got one so don't know myself but thats what I've heard/read on SNet - but then you hear/read so many things on here I'm surprised the UK hasn't run out of salt.

Most short shifts just move the fulcrum of the lever up abit, hence shortening the 'throw' needed to move the linkage. If you do the maths, you effectively reduce the amount of leverage available - so if anything you can't force it as much once home
