Default Is my diff knackered?

To cut a long story short my car is behaving terribly when coming on/off the accelerator pedal. Once in gear and on drive its fine, no noises and smooth. However when going from no accelerater to pressing the pedal its very jerky to engage drive, not at all smooth like it should be, there is also a knocking noise with it. It is the same when coming off the pedal. As I said the gearbox appears to be fine both in getting it into gear and no strange noises once on drive so is this likely to be my diff? If it is can the front diff be replaced/repaired as I understand its in the gearbox?
Any help appreciated,
Will

Check all the mountings holding the engine/trans/rear diff.
Check the propshaft UJ's are tight and free of play.
Check the 8 CV's on the 4 driveshafts.

I would suspect something 'external' to be a t fault.

Just my thoughts.

as 911 said sounds like something external
i would suspect a worn engine/gearbox mount
