Default Help...Changing from 1st to 2nd then BANG!

I have a MY00 Turbo which I bought 4 months ago with 60,000 km on the clock. Yesterday and 5,000 km later while driving in a rather spirited manner, I heard a loud bang when shifting from first to second at 7.000 RPM. The car never shifted to second gear even though the clutch was fully depressed at the time. I couldn't get the car in any gear after. I pulled over, turned the engine off and tried to put the car in any gear. After numerous tries, I got it in first gear. I turned it on and limped back home in 1st. Luckily it was only a 2km drive.

While I was driving, I could hear the sound of metal crunching underneath. Now I'm no expert but I guess the gear is broken?! I was told by a mechanic that my second gear only is gone and the rest of the gearbox should be ok. Do I need to change the whole gearbox? Or is it possible to fix it? Is this something common? The car has at best around 260 BHP so the gearbox should be able to take that kind of power right? Is there any way of avoiding this from happening again? Any tips? Needless to say, I never shift without depressing the clutch fully.

Sorry for what might be ignorant questions! I tried searching but couldn't find what I was looking for. And by the way this is my first post. I just wish it was a happier post Any help would be really appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

With no disrespect to 500 above, David at www.apiengines.com do gearboxes routinely every week.
They are based in Leamington Spa in Warwickshire but will exchange/ship to a garage etc to get you going.

Graham.

Sounds identical to what happened with mine. Totally stripped 2nd gear.

Unless you have further power aspirations look for a secondhand replacement box (£250-500).

I'm based in Jordan...a few thousand kilometers away from the UK! I don't have many options. It seems I'm going to replace it with a '98 STi gearbox. The cost will be around £400 which is not too bad of a price here. Is there any way to tell if the second hand gear box is in a decent condition or not? Or does it have to be installed first and tested?

I don't know, I haven't asked. But I'm sure it'll take quite a while for the gearbox to get here (maybe a month?!) and I have no idea if I have to pay customs for it or not. It might end up costing a lot. I would rather have something available locally. I was just looking for advice

£400 is a good price.

Just make sure wherever you are buying it from guarantee its in good working order.

Cant recall whether you'll need to change the diff with an STi box?
