Planet Gears??
Hi Guys, Im looking for your help again with this please.
What are PLANET GEARS? The reason I ask is that a while back i posted a thread about finding metal filings in my rear diff oil and the fact that there was a whurring(spelling?) noise coming from the rear of the car.
At first the mechanic thought i would need a new rear diff but on inspection he says that there are a couple of cogs missing from the planet gears.
I havent got a clue what these are or do so is it likely to be expensive or should i just get a new diff??? The car is a MY01 WRX Bugeye
Sorry for the essay again but id really like any help with this. Thanks very much
Tom

Well they explain what they are. Thanks for those. Im guessing then that it wouldnt cost much more to replace the whole diff. The mechanic just seemed to imply it would be cheaper thats all. Just wanted to make sure before I choose who to do the work ie him or someone like API

Tom, just get another diff, just make sure it's the right ratio..... if you have the damaged gears replaced, then it'll need setting up again, and who knows what damage the broken off bits did while they were floating around.....
