Default How to split longitudinal gearbox joint?

My dad was down today to watch the match and we decided to strip my old gearbox to have a look at the damage (lost 3rd gear). We took off the rear two sections with transverse joints and removed all the bolts holding the longitudinal halves together. This joint appears to have no gasket and be incredibly tight. Couldn't get it to shift even with the hammer.

How do you split this joint? Do I just need to whack it harder or is there a less agricultural way of separating the two halves?

You need to take 2 of the bolts out that hold the rear bearing in place.
