Freind of mine said the same thing about my old scoob. Only when the car was cold. Left it with the dealer overnight so they could run it from cold. Told me the sound was not unusual and not to worry. Apart from that the car ran like a swiss watch.

A good couple of engine flushes will quieten the tappets down. The noise is a loudish ticking noise.

Depends on the model year. Later engines have solid lifters which are noisier than the earlier hydraulic items. My 99MY is quite tappety, the injectors tick quite loudly too.

Scoob injectors are very noisey.

I was convinced that my poor, thoroughly thrashed, 66000 mile engine was on the way out until Pat went over the whole thing with a stethascope the other day...the pistons weren't making any noise, the bearings weren't grumbling the tappets were silent...the injectors were ticking away like anything!

So I'm now going to push the envelope a bit more now I feel more confident that my engine is strong

Matt,
MY car suffer exactly the same problem and like Tim had car checked out( Thanks Dave at Lavender Enfield) and was found to be a very noisy set of injectors.
So 50,000 miles and the car still pulls as strong as ever.

You can buy engine flushes from the petrol station or any car shop. Just put in the the oil and fast idle the car for about 15 minutes, this gets rid of gunge in the engine, if you engine is of hydraulic type then it may take a couple to get rid of the noise as the tappet oil galleries are very small.
