Gerabox bracket - information???

Hello,
I posted on here a while back complaining of problems when selecting reverse then first repeatedly. Also sometimes a major reluctance to come out of 2nd !
I have since been told I have the quickshift option on my car but further investigation showed that this was not causing the problem. I've been back to the dealer today and have been informed that a 'bracket' was on the WRONG way round
They did not supply the car from new and I've only had it 3 weeks (MY00) so it must have been done before. It's now fixed, new gearbox oil in and feels much, much better.
What I want to know (for curiosity) is what is the bracket there for and where does it fit in the scheme of things .. just for my information.
Thanks,
Doofus.

if it was the bracket that holds the gear lever stay in place on the gear box then on earlier models they used to have a spring going through the small hole in it to the gearlever universal joint this then used to centralize the gear lever when it was in neutral your centralization is done in the box which again is adjustable so you can set up where the gearlever sits in neutral
